"To bring nature’s cure, via homeopathy to the lay person in a simple, safe and affordable way."
ongoing activities
We believe that knowledge empowers us and thus our focus on education is essential in helping to broaden the use and the understanding of homeopathy in our communities.
- trainings – our 400 strong and growing, stockists in South Africa undergo regular in-store training for their staff members to ensure up-to-date product knowledge
- workshops – we do regular workshops for small groups of interested clients e.g. new Mums groups, nursing sisters at baby clinics, midwives etc. Workshops are an ideal forum for learning, where participants can ask questions and have issues addressed immediately. They learn about the basics of homeopathy, the importance of choosing the appropriate remedy for a condition, correct dosing and the wide application of the remedies.
- students – we regularly give lectures to pharmacy students and homeopathy students to introduce them to our range, so that when they enter the work environment, they are better informed about the benefits of the range.
- exhibitions – in 2005, Pegasus Homeopathics took a decision to focus on the safety of homeopathy and to actively promote the range to expectant Mums. The remedies are safe for Mums to use themselves during pregnancy and breast feeding and for newborn babies. We actively participate in a number of baby and parenting shows each year, where we have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with Mums and Dads. Many have never been exposed to homeopathy and others have some idea but would like to know more. This endeavour has been most successful and will be an ongoing feature of the business. Ian Lindsay Wheeler - B. Pharm (Rhodes) 1981
Ian has been a practising pharmacist for over 20 years, initiating his first business with a retail pharmacy, 14th Avenue Pharmacy in Johannesburg, South Africa. This successful business was sold in 1989 when Ian embarked on a transatlantic sailing adventure for 14 months. In 1991, he returned to Hout Bay, Cape Town to establish Wheeler's Pharmacy & Health Shop. Ian expanded and built this business for the next nine years. During this time, he undertook a three year classical homeopathic course with Dr Ruth Bloch, a well-renowned South African homeopath.
In June1999, Ian sold his share of Wheelers Pharmacy and took a six month sabbatical. This time was spent studying further and refining the herbal and homeopathic remedies he had developed with good friend and mentor, Dr Rene Anderson, a Naturopath with vast experience in herbology, homeopathy and nutricology. In January 2000, he started a new retail business, Steps to Health Pharmacy & Health Shop in Tokai, Cape Town where the focus this time was on natural and complimentary medicine. In January 2002, while still running Steps to Health, Ian went into partnership with Gayle Salter in pegasus homeopathics.
"I love what I do and I have a passion for healing people, particularly chronic cases where allopathic medicine has not been successful. As a pharmacist, I have always had an intrinsic passion for natural and complementary medicine."
Gayle Salter - B. Pharm (Rhodes) 1984
Gayle initially worked extensively in hospital pharmacy, first at Johannesburg General Hospital for three years and then Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town for six years. She gained valuable experience working in the Intensive care Units, Transplant Units, Radiotherapy and Cancer Units and all wards. Gayle then spent three years working in London for SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals in their Clinical Trial Supplies Division.
Working in clinical development for a large multi-national firm and dealing with countries all around the world were most valuable in broadening her outlook and experience base. In 1998, Gayle returned to South Africa where she met Ian and joined the staff at Wheelers Pharmacy in Hout Bay for the next 2 years. She left Wheelers Pharmacy in January 2001 to work as a locum pharmacist and to pursue her interest in helping people to take more responsibility for their own health and work towards healing themselves. Gayle in January 2002 went into partnership with Ian Wheeler to form pegasus homeopathics.
"My passion is helping others through education, encouraging people to be more responsible for their own health and wellbeing, giving them a tool to do so. I love the fact that by using homeopathy we can stimulate the body to heal itself, by simply giving it a nudge in the right direction - honoring the wisdom of the body and giving it a chance to heal itself."
pegasus homeopathics
Through Ian's daily consulting practice in the pharmacy, he saw the need for a compact kit that would meet the demands of his clients for a more holistic and natural method of treating illnesses but one that would be straightforward to use and completely safe. In discussion with Gayle on this issue, the seed for the bluebox kit was sown.
Both Ian and Gayle felt it important to educate people about homeopathy and to address the incorrect perception that treating oneself with homeopathic medicine is complicated and time consuming.
Ian and Gayle formed pegasus homeopathics in January 2002 and are currently investigating further homeopathic and herbal kits targeting different areas of need.
